On Wednesday 5th April Year 6 showcased their learning about The Early Islamic Civilization. Parents enjoyed a guided tour of various cities along The Silk Road, during which the children spoke about the geographical features they had represented in a piece of 3D artwork.
Next, Year 6 wowed parents with their knowledge of how create nets for 3D shapes and how to calculate the volume of 3D shapes such as cubes, cuboids and triangular prisms. They presented their work in the form of Islamic buildings, which also featured tessellating mosaic shapes.
While the parents and grandparents tucked into our delicious cakes (made on a large scale using our skills of ratio and proportion to scale up ingredients) they were treated to storytelling and poetry reading. The Eighth Tale of Sinbad the Sailor made for very exciting listening and poetry about The House of Wisdom enthralled with magical use of metaphors and imagery.
Finally, Yew class brought this ancient civilization bang up to date as they performed the traditional Sinbad the Sailor song as a modern day rap, complete with rap moves!
Some comments from parents/grandparents:
“What a wonderful event; the children knew so much. Well done to everybody.”
“That was amazing. Well done for all the hard work.”
“I have learnt something today!”
“That cake is mine!!”
