Beech Teacher: Miss J Ramsay
PE day: Tuesday & Thursday
Welcome to Beech Class! 🌳
In Beech Class we are a mixed Year 1 and Year 2 group. While we come together as one class family, children are always taught their own year group’s reading, writing and maths so that everyone is learning the right skills and knowledge for their stage of development.

Year 1 will use Drawing Club to stimulate their writing. They will use one text, fairytale or stimulus every week focusing on character, setting and innovation. They will write magical codes to bring their writing to life. Year 2 will use the Alison Philipson 3 Week Sequence of reading, toolkit, writing focussing on different text types and a wider range of grammatical skills.

Years 1 and 2 will follow their year group’s White Rose Maths programme of learning using a mixture of White Rose Maths booklets, practical resources and extension tasks to support and build on their year group’s skills.
Across Key Stage 1, we all share the same exciting topics, so children can work together, collaborate, and inspire each other! The topics for our three terms are ‘The Great Fire of London’, ‘The Seaside’ and ‘The Victorians’. All these topics are based on a ‘big question’ which will be used as a stimulus for all the learning taking place in English, Maths, Science and all of our foundation subjects.
Our Learning Spaces
To make our learning even more exciting, we use:
- The Discovery Den – where children complete focused, adult-led tasks and book work.
- The Recall Room – where children take on challenges that spiral back to prior learning to keep knowledge fresh.

Reading, Phonics & Spelling
Year 1: Daily Little Wandle phonics lessons to build confident readers.
In Year 1, children will take part in daily phonics lessons. We will be recapping previous learning, learning new graphemes and phonemes and will be practicing blending and reading words.
We will also use the Little Wandle Three Reads approach to reading focussing on decoding, prosody and comprehension.
Year 2: Daily Little Wandle: Bridge to Spelling and using Accelerated Reader books matched to their level.
In Year 2, children will build on their phonics learning by taking part in Little Wandle: Bridge to Spelling sessions which recap their phonics and focus on spelling words accurately.
We will also use Accelerated Reader assessments to analyse our “ZPD” which allows us to choose appropriate books to read. We can use our Accelerated Reader logins to complete quizzes at home.
At home: Please read daily and record this in the reading record. Please practise the weekly spellings from your child’s homework folders and the Learn by Heart maths focus for the test each week. Each term a homework grid will be sent out where homework projects can be selected and worked on as a family. These can be brought into school or shared on Class Dojo.
All this support is invaluable and will be highly appreciated. Please remember to bring in your reading book and reading record daily, as it is an important communication tool between school and home.
In Beech Class, we believe everyone can shine and reach their full potential if we try our best and support each other to be EXTRAORDINARY!
